2005: CIRC Grows to 231 Competitors

52k

This year saw a tremendous increase in collegiate, youth and club entries. Much of this can be attributed to our 'Team-cap' fee structure, the growing popularity of the Challenges not to forget the addition of 'Winner Takes All' medals.

Open Challenge

We consolidated the Collegiate and Fitness/Club Challenge this year into one Open Challenge. This allowed us to offer both a Men's and Women's Division with a Concept Model D as a prize for each.

Going into the Challenge Relay, University of Chicago held the lead by 3 tenths of a second over Northwestern and 2.8 tenths over LPBC. When it came to the relay, however, LPBC managed to pull away from the even paced Northwestern and UC teams to capture the Women's Open Challenge 2005 with a composite time of 16:33.9

Although three teams are required to run this Challenge, we decided to go ahead with only two. Both teams had battled it out in the 2K so we decided the rivalry should continue! Going into the Challenge Relay, the University of Chicago had a 1 second lead over Northwestern. When it came to the relay, however, U of C managed to pull away from Northwestern to capture the Men's Open Challenge 2005 with a composite time of 13:51.1

Youth Challenge

Going into the Challenge Relay, Ignatius had an 8+ second lead over Loyola and 12 seconds over Detroit. While Detroit managed to sneak past Loyola in the Relay, it wasn't enough to stop an Ignatius' victory by 28 seconds to win the Women's Youth Challenge 2005 with a composite time of 16:33.9

Going into the Challenge Relay, Detroit had a 1.4 second lead over Ignatius and 4.4 seconds over Loyola. Detroit pulled away from both challengers by 12 and 14 seconds respectively to win the Men's Youth Challenge 2005 with a composite time of 14:09.6

A Special Thanks
To Our Competitors / Coaches / Parents

CIRC 2005 continues to grow with 231 competitors compared to 132 last years. This would not have been possible without the enthusiastic support from the coaches and parents. Additionally, the 'Team Cap', medals and the Challenges all contributed to a high-pitched competitive climate. Thanks also to the Detroit Boat Club for weathering the drive to join the competition.

To Our Volunteers & Sponsors

It is simple; without them, CIRC would not be possible. Our heartfelt thanks to: Rob DeCleene, Coach Tim, Steve McNulty, Brian Thompson (Design), Misha Caylor (Webmistress), Montana Butsch, Frank Woodward, and Ralph Schatz (photographer). And finally, a warm thanks to all the staff of Creative Access who help to pull this event together in addition to their financial generosity.

Seward Park

Thanks to Joyce Herron, the Chicago Park District and her staff for their support before, during and after the event. They were accommodating in every way to make this truly a successful event.
